Change for E-VER - Killing the myths

Welcome to this episode of Change for E-VER, featuring Henrik Johansson, Sales Specialist Electrification at Konecranes. In this episode, we will cover some important truths about Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs): their safety, 24/7 operational capability, and practicality beyond climate impact.

Busting the myths

Let's start by addressing common myths. The first myth is that "Li-Ion batteries catch fire every now and then." The answer is a resounding NO! If you trust flying in an aircraft, you can trust BEVs. Studies from Norway, a leader in electric car sales, show that petrol and diesel cars have four to five times more fires than electric cars. Tesla claims an 11 times lower risk of fire per mile for electric cars. Therefore, BEVs are safe!

Another myth is that "it's not possible to operate 24/7 with a BEV." Again, the answer is NO! While charging is necessary, BEVs can operate similarly to diesel machines with the right battery and charging capacity.

Infrastructure and climate adaptability

The myth that "needed infrastructure investments will kill my hope to go electric" is both YES and NO. An entry-level charger with a 63 Amp plug is affordable for most companies, but fast chargers require a larger investment.

The myth that "electric forklifts can't operate in cold climates" is debunked by Konecranes' Thermal Management System. This system maintains battery temperature around +25°C, ensuring operation in any climate without compromising productivity or uptime. With pre-heating and cooling functions, machines are ready for service anytime, anywhere.

Cost and competition

The myth that "competition offers much cheaper products" is often true at first glance. However, Konecranes E-VER machines are modern, with low energy consumption and maintenance costs. There's no need for battery exchange equipment, and factors like battery lifetime, energy throughput, and residual value must be considered. When all these are added, is the competition really cheaper?

The important truths

  • BEVs are very safe, with studies disproving the myth of higher fire risk.
  • They can operate 24/7 with adequate battery and charging capacity.
  • Electric machines are practical solutions, not just for lower climate impact.
  • With affordable entry-level chargers and Konecranes' Thermal Management System, electric forklifts can operate in any climate.
  • The lifetime cost difference between diesel and electric machines is narrow.
